Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened to room temperature
  • 6 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk

For the Chocolate Frosting

  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1–2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Lightly butter a 10-ounce ramekin and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar with a hand mixer for about 30 seconds until smooth.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing for another 30 seconds until fully incorporated.
  4. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Stir in the milk until the batter is smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared ramekin and place it on a rimmed baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool for 5 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Chocolate Frosting

  1. While the cake cools, combine the butter, sifted powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, and vanilla extract in a bowl.
  2. Mix with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
  3. Frost the cake on the top and sides. Add sprinkles if desired. You can frost the cake in the ramekin or after removing it.
  4. To remove the cake from the ramekin: run a thin knife around the edge, place a plate on top, and flip it over carefully.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This small yellow cake is soft, fluffy, and perfectly sweet. Topped with rich, creamy chocolate frosting, it’s ideal for single servings, small gatherings, or anytime you want a homemade dessert without baking a large cake.

Tips

  • Use room temperature ingredients for a smoother batter and better texture.
  • Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the cake light and airy.
  • Cooling the cake slightly before frosting prevents the frosting from melting.
  • For easier removal from the ramekin, lightly grease and flour the ramekin.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Replace milk with any plant-based milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Use cream cheese frosting instead of chocolate for a different flavor.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the cake batter for extra warmth.
  • Mix in chocolate chips or small berries for added texture.
