Ingredients

  • 1 (17.3 oz) box puff pastry sheets (see notes)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/3 cup yellow onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage (see notes)
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese, grated
  • 2 eggs, divided
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon water or milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. If desired, you can do this after assembling half of the sausage rolls.
  2. Thaw the puff pastry according to package instructions, keeping it in the wrapper while it thaws to prevent it from drying out.
  3. In a small skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onions and minced garlic, and cook for 5-7 minutes until softened. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the ground sausage, cooled onions and garlic, panko breadcrumbs, grated cheddar cheese, 1 whisked egg, Dijon mustard, and parsley.
  5. Divide the sausage mixture into 9 equal portions and set aside. Place the remaining mixture in the fridge until ready to use.
  6. Lay one sheet of puff pastry flat on a cutting board and cut along the creased lines. Then, cut each rectangle into two squares, making a total of 9 squares.
  7. Roll each portion of sausage into a log and place it in the center of each pastry square. Roll the pastry around the sausage, sealing the edges to form a cylinder. Cut each roll in half and place on a plate. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.
  8. Repeat with the remaining pastry and sausage mixture. Cover and refrigerate the rolls for up to 1 day or proceed with baking immediately.
  9. Place the sausage rolls on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  10. Whisk the remaining egg with water or milk to make an egg wash. Brush the egg wash over each sausage roll.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the tops are golden brown. If baking immediately, 20 minutes is sufficient; if baking from the fridge, about 25 minutes.
  12. Remove from the oven and serve with your favorite dipping sauce (see notes for ideas).

Tips, Variations, and Substitutions

  • Sausage: You can swap ground pork sausage with turkey sausage or chicken sausage for a lighter version.
  • Cheese: Try substituting cheddar with other cheeses like mozzarella, gouda, or a spicy pepper jack.
  • Puff Pastry: If you’re in a pinch, you can use store-bought crescent roll dough or biscuit dough as an alternative to puff pastry.
  • Make-Ahead: You can prepare the sausage rolls in advance and refrigerate them for up to 1 day. They also freeze well and can be baked straight from the freezer—just add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

FAQs

  • Can I make these vegetarian?
Yes, simply replace the sausage with a plant-based sausage or seasoned tofu for a vegetarian option.
  • Can I bake these from frozen?
Absolutely! If frozen, increase the baking time by about 5-10 minutes.
  • Can I use different pastry?
You can substitute puff pastry with shortcrust pastry or phyllo dough, although the texture will be slightly different.

Serving

Serve these sausage rolls as a snack or appetizer with a variety of dipping sauces, such as mustard, ketchup, or a tangy BBQ sauce. Pair with a light salad or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.

Suggestions

  • For a fun twist, add a layer of caramelized onions or a slice of cheese inside the rolls before wrapping them in pastry.
  • Serve with a side of pickles or coleslaw for a balanced and satisfying meal.
