Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds apples
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples. Place them in a 1 ½-quart slow cooker.
  2. Stir in the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the lid, stir, and cook uncovered on low for an additional hour to thicken the mixture.
  5. Blend the apple mixture until smooth using an immersion blender. If using a regular blender, vent the lid, cover with a towel, and blend slowly to prevent splatters.
  6. Let the apple butter cool, then transfer it to a clean glass container. Store in the refrigerator.

Yield: About ¾ cup (96 grams | 3.38 oz.)

Tips

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for the best texture and flavor.
  • Stir occasionally during cooking to prevent sticking or burning.
  • For a thicker consistency, cook uncovered for an extra 30–60 minutes.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Sweetener swaps: Replace sugar with maple syrup, honey, or coconut sugar.
  • Spice adjustments: Add ginger, cloves, or pumpkin pie spice for a unique flavor.
  • Apple blends: Mix different types of apples for a more complex taste.
