Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy; casings removed if necessary)
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Onion:
Heat olive oil in a large pot, Dutch oven, or braiser over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 4 minutes until softened and translucent.
  2. Brown the Meat:
Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook, breaking the meat into small pieces with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked (8–10 minutes). Drain excess fat, leaving about 2–3 tablespoons for flavor.
  3. Add Garlic:
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, stirring frequently to release its aroma.
  4. Incorporate the Liquids and Seasoning:
Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, Italian seasoning, oregano, sugar, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to combine.
  5. Simmer the Sauce:
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat to low, partially cover the pot, and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes. For deeper flavors, simmer for up to an hour or more, stirring occasionally. Adjust the heat to maintain a steady simmer. Add extra beef broth if the sauce becomes too thick.
  6. Season and Serve:
Taste and season generously with salt and pepper. Serve over your favorite pasta and garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
