This Homemade Hot Dog Chili is thick, rich, and packed with classic savory flavor that turns ordinary hot dogs into a crowd-pleasing meal. Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 1–2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2½ tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 3 tablespoons cornmeal
  • ½ tablespoon kosher salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Cook the onion and garlic
Heat the vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and lightly translucent, about 3–4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Brown the beef
Add the ground beef to the pan. Cook while breaking the meat into very fine crumbles using a potato masher or wooden spoon. Continue cooking until the beef is browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  3. Season and build the chili
Stir in the chili powder, sugar, cumin, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, beef broth, cornmeal, and kosher salt. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  4. Simmer until thickened
Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cornmeal will help create the signature thick and hearty hot dog chili texture.
  5. Taste and adjust
Taste before serving and add more salt if needed. If the chili becomes too thick, stir in a splash of broth or water.
  6. Serve warm
Spoon generously over hot dogs and add your favorite toppings.
