Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 ¼ pounds (570 g) ground beef, 90% lean
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup (30 g) dried breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Gravy

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced (white or cremini)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups (350 ml) beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, onion, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Avoid overmixing.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4–5 oval patties, about ½ inch thick.

Cook the Steaks

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook patties 5 minutes per side or until browned and internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  3. Remove steaks, cover with foil, and set aside.

Prepare the Mushroom Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms and onions 4–5 minutes until onions are translucent.
  2. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Stir in flour and cook 30 seconds while stirring.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth and bring to a boil. Simmer 3 minutes until thickened.
  5. Season with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.

Combine and Serve

  1. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over the top. Cook 5 more minutes to heat through.
  2. Garnish with chopped parsley.
  3. Serve over mashed potatoes with steamed broccoli or green beans.
