Ingredients

  • 1¼ cups butter, divided
  • 30 saltine crackers (plus a few extras in case of breakage)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 14 oz (1 can) sweetened condensed milk
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • ¾ cup finely chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Line a 15 × 10-inch jelly roll pan with heavy-duty foil.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt ¼ cup butter and pour it into the prepared pan. Tilt the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer over the butter.
  4. Melt the remaining butter in the same saucepan. Stir in the brown sugar and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the sweetened condensed milk until fully combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the crackers.
  6. Bake for 9–10 minutes, until the toffee mixture is bubbly and golden brown. Remove from the oven carefully.
  7. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate morsels over the hot toffee. Let sit for 5 minutes until melted, then spread into an even layer using an offset spatula or butter knife.
  8. Sprinkle the chopped walnuts on top and lightly press them into the melted chocolate.
  9. Allow to cool on the counter for 30 minutes, then refrigerate for 30–60 minutes until the chocolate is set.
  10. Lift the foil to remove the candy from the pan. Peel off the foil and cut the toffee into squares using a sharp knife.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
