Ingredients:

  • 10 lbs very ripe apples (any variety)
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • Cinnamon (optional, for serving)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Apples:

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples into chunks. Set aside.

2. Cook the Apples:

  • In a large stockpot, add 1 ½ cups water and 2 Tbsp of sugar (if using). Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  • Once the water is boiling, add the sliced apples. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let the apples cook for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally until the apples soften and break down.

3. Mash the Apples:

  • Once the apples are tender, mash them to your desired consistency. You can use a potato masher, immersion blender, or electric hand mixer to achieve a smooth or chunky texture.

4. Serve or Store:

  • Allow the applesauce to cool to room temperature. If desired, serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon. For long-term storage, refrigerate, freeze, or follow the canning instructions below.

5. To Can Applesauce:

  • Wash and sterilize 8 pint-sized jars and lids.
  • Using a ladle and funnel, fill the sterilized jars with hot applesauce, leaving some headspace at the top. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean paper towel to ensure a proper seal.
  • Fill a large canning pot ⅓ full with water and bring it to a boil. Place the jars into the pot, ensuring they are covered by 1-2 inches of water. Bring the water back to a boil and process the jars for 20 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the jars from the pot using a jar lifter and place them upright on a clean towel to cool. The lids should seal with a “pop” sound. If any jars do not seal, refrigerate them and enjoy within two weeks.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This Easy Homemade Applesauce recipe is a quick, delicious, and customizable way to use up ripe apples. The natural sweetness of the apples shines through, and the optional addition of sugar and cinnamon lets you adjust the flavor to your preference. It’s perfect for kids and adults alike and can be enjoyed immediately or preserved for later use. Whether served as a side dish, snack, or dessert, this applesauce is always a hit.

Tips

  • Use Ripe Apples: The sweeter and riper the apples, the less sugar you’ll need to add. Choose apples like Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp for naturally sweet applesauce.
  • Adjust Consistency: If you prefer a smoother texture, use an immersion blender or electric hand mixer. For a chunkier applesauce, simply mash with a potato masher.
  • Avoid Overcooking: If you cook the apples too long, the applesauce may become too thin. Keep an eye on the consistency, especially towards the end of the cooking time.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add Spices: Experiment with other spices like nutmeg, cloves, or allspice for a unique flavor profile.
  • Sweeteners: You can substitute granulated sugar with honey or maple syrup for a natural sweetener.
  • Low-Sugar Option: Skip the sugar entirely and let the natural sweetness of the apples shine through.

FAQs

Can I make applesauce with unpeeled apples? You can leave the peel on if desired, but peeling the apples will give you a smoother applesauce. If you leave the peels on, use an immersion blender for a smoother texture.

How long does homemade applesauce last? In the refrigerator, applesauce will last about 1-2 weeks. For longer storage, freeze or can the applesauce using the method provided.

Can I make applesauce without sugar? Yes, you can make applesauce without any added sugar. The apples themselves will provide enough natural sweetness for most people.

Serving Suggestions

  • As a Snack: Serve chilled or at room temperature as a healthy snack on its own.
  • As a Side Dish: Applesauce pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, especially pork and turkey.
  • For Breakfast: Spoon it over oatmeal or yogurt for a delicious breakfast addition.
  • Baking: Use applesauce as a substitute for oil or butter in baked goods like muffins or cakes to make them lighter and more moist.
