For egg wash (optional):

  • 1 egg beaten with 1 teaspoon water or milk

  1. Activate the yeast:
    In a stand mixer bowl or large mixing bowl, combine yeast, lukewarm water, and sugar. Let sit 5 minutes if using active dry yeast until slightly foamy.
  2. Mix the dough:
    Add oil, egg, salt, and flour. Mix on low speed until the dough begins to come together. Increase to medium-low and knead for 6โ€“10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and the dough clears the sides of the bowl.
  3. Shape the rolls:
    Lightly oil your hands and work surface. Divide dough into 9 equal portions (~2 ounces / 60 g each) and shape into smooth balls.
  4. Proof the rolls:
    Grease a 9ร—9 inch (23ร—23 cm) baking dish and place dough balls evenly apart. Cover loosely with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place for at least 15 minutes until puffy. Test by gently pressingโ€”indentations should slowly spring back partially.
  5. Bake:
    Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Optionally brush rolls with egg wash. Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Finish:
    Immediately brush tops with melted butter and sprinkle with flaky sea salt if desired. Serve warm.
