This smooth and flavorful hummus is made with simple pantry ingredients and blended to perfection. It’s a go-to dip, spread, or side dish that comes together in minutes and tastes far better than store-bought.

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup high-quality tahini
  • 2–4 tablespoons cold water (more as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 medium garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
  • Juice of 1 lemon (about 2–3 tablespoons)
  • 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained

Optional Toppings:

  • Extra olive oil (for drizzling)
  • Chopped fresh parsley
  • Ground sumac or paprika
  • Toasted pine nuts

Instructions

1. Blend the base:
In a food processor, combine the tahini, 2 tablespoons of cold water, olive oil, cumin, salt, garlic, and lemon juice. Blend until the mixture is creamy and smooth.

2. Add chickpeas:
Add the chickpeas to the food processor. Blend for 3–4 minutes, stopping once or twice to scrape down the sides of the bowl, until the hummus is very smooth. If the texture is too thick, add additional cold water a tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.

3. Taste and adjust:
Taste and adjust the seasoning by adding more salt, cumin, or lemon juice as desired.

4. Serve:
Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with your preferred toppings. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Tips

  • Use cold water to help the tahini whip up light and creamy.
  • Peel the chickpeas for an ultra-smooth finish (optional, but worth it).
  • Use fresh garlic for bold flavor—or roast it for a milder, sweeter taste.
  • Don’t rush the blending: Let it go for several minutes to get the creamiest consistency.
  • Taste as you go—adjust lemon juice, salt, and cumin to your preference.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Roasted garlic hummus: Swap raw garlic for 1–2 roasted cloves.
  • Spicy hummus: Add a pinch of cayenne or blend in roasted red peppers or harissa.
  • Herb hummus: Blend in fresh parsley, basil, or cilantro for a green twist.
  • No tahini? Try natural peanut butter or almond butter as a substitute (flavor will vary).
  • Lemon zest can be added for an extra citrusy punch.

FAQs

Can I make hummus without a food processor?
Yes, you can use a high-powered blender. A regular blender might struggle with the thickness.

Why is my hummus too thick?
Just add more cold water, a tablespoon at a time, and blend until smooth.

How long does homemade hummus last?
It keeps for up to 3–4 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Can I freeze hummus?
Yes, it freezes well. Store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and stir before serving.

Serving

Serve hummus as a dip, spread, or side dish. It pairs perfectly with:

  • Pita bread or pita chips
  • Fresh veggie sticks (carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers)
  • Crackers or flatbread
  • As a spread on sandwiches or wraps
  • Alongside falafel or grilled meats

Suggestions

  • Drizzle with infused oils like chili or garlic oil for extra flavor.
  • Make a hummus bowl with toppings like olives, diced tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta.
  • Serve warm: Gently heat the hummus and top with sautéed mushrooms or ground lamb for a hearty version.
  • Batch prep: Double the recipe and store in small containers for snacking throughout the week.
