  • Stir gently, not shake—this preserves the smooth texture.
  • Express the orange peel over the glass to release its essential oils for added aroma.
  • Use high-quality bourbon or rye whiskey for the best flavor.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Use Rye Whiskey: For a spicier, drier version.
  • Try Maple Syrup: Swap sugar for ½ teaspoon maple syrup for a subtle twist.
  • Add a Dash of Orange Bitters: To emphasize the citrus element.
  • Smoked Old Fashioned: Smoke the glass or garnish for a dramatic and flavorful presentation.
  • Rum or Cognac Base: Switch spirits to explore unique versions of this classic.

FAQs

Can I use simple syrup instead of sugar?
Yes! Use ½ to ¾ teaspoon of simple syrup in place of the sugar cube for quicker mixing.

What’s the best bourbon for an Old Fashioned?
Go for a mid- to top-shelf bourbon with strong caramel or vanilla notes—Buffalo Trace, Bulleit, or Woodford Reserve are great options.

Do I have to use bitters?
Yes—bitters are essential. They add depth and balance the sweetness. Angostura is traditional, but you can experiment with other types.

What glass should I use?
A lowball, rocks, or Old Fashioned glass is ideal.
