Smooth and creamy matcha latte made with ceremonial-grade matcha, steamed milk, and a touch of sweetness. This easy homemade latte is perfect for mornings, afternoon breaks, or a cozy caffeine boost, with options for oat, almond, or dairy milk.

Design sans titre 2025 08 15T231715.344

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ tsp ceremonial-grade matcha
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp hot water (175°F / 80°C, not boiling)
  • ¾ cup steamed milk (oat milk or your preferred milk)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Matcha:
Sift the matcha through a fine-mesh strainer into a heatproof bowl or measuring cup with a spout. This helps prevent clumps and ensures a smooth latte.
  2. Whisk the Matcha:
Add sugar if using. Pour in the hot water and whisk vigorously in a “W” motion with a bamboo whisk for 30–45 seconds, until the matcha is fully dissolved and slightly frothy.
  3. Combine with Milk:
Pour the whisked matcha into a mug. Slowly add steamed milk on top, holding back some foam with a spoon if desired, then gently pour the foam over the latte.
  4. Serve:
    Serve immediately while warm.

Tips

  • Use ceremonial-grade matcha for the best flavor and color.
  • Avoid boiling water, as it can make matcha bitter.
  • Sift matcha to remove clumps and create a silky texture.
  • Whisk in a “W” motion for proper froth and smooth consistency.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Milk Options: Use almond, soy, or whole milk instead of oat milk.
  • Sweeteners: Substitute sugar with honey, maple syrup, or agave.
  • Iced Version: Pour over ice instead of using steamed milk for a refreshing iced matcha latte.
  • Flavor Enhancements: Add a dash of vanilla extract or cinnamon for extra depth.

FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?
Matcha latte is best freshly prepared. Pre-mixed matcha can separate, so it’s recommended to whisk right before drinking.

Can I use a regular whisk instead of a bamboo whisk?
Yes, but a bamboo whisk produces a better froth and smooth consistency.

Is matcha latte caffeinated?
Yes, matcha contains caffeine, but generally less than coffee, with a more sustained energy boost.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve in a pre-warmed mug to keep the latte hot longer.
  • Pair with a light pastry or biscotti for a satisfying snack.
  • Sprinkle a little matcha powder on top for a decorative touch.
