Ingredients

  • 1 pound sweet Bing cherries, pitted and stems removed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey (or preferred sweetener)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (store-bought or homemade)
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 strip of orange peel
  • 1 cup bourbon (or favorite whiskey)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cherries
Place the pitted cherries into two clean pint-sized mason jars (or one large quart jar). Set aside.

2. Make the Syrup
In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine water, honey, vanilla extract, and nutmeg. Stir until well combined. Add the cinnamon stick and orange peel.

3. Simmer the Mixture
Heat until the mixture reaches a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low and continue simmering for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

4. Add Bourbon
Remove the saucepan from heat. Strain out the cinnamon stick and orange peel, then slowly stir in the bourbon.

5. Combine and Chill
Pour the bourbon mixture evenly over the cherries in the jars. Allow to cool to room temperature, then secure the lids. Shake gently and refrigerate for at least 3 days before using.

6. Storage
Stored in the refrigerator, bourbon-soaked cherries can last 2โ€“3 months.
