Air Fryer Whole Chicken

A perfectly roasted, juicy, and flavorful whole chicken made effortlessly in your air fryer. Crispy skin and tender meat without the need for an oven.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, 4 lb (1.8 kg), giblets removed
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) olive oil or avocado oil, not extra virgin
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat air fryer: Set the air fryer to 350°F (180°C) for 5 minutes. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat option, run it for 5 minutes at the same temperature.
  2. Prepare seasoning: In a small bowl, combine smoked paprika, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Prepare chicken: Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Ensure the cavity is empty. Drizzle olive oil over the chicken and rub the seasoning evenly all over, including inside the cavity. Optionally, truss the legs together with kitchen twine.
  4. Cook first side: Place the chicken breast-side down in the air fryer basket. Cook for 25 minutes. If the chicken browns too quickly, lightly cover with aluminum foil.
  5. Flip and cook: Carefully flip the chicken using tongs so the breast side faces up. Cook for another 25 minutes, shielding with foil if needed. Check doneness: the thickest part of the breast or thigh should reach 165°F (74°C) on a meat thermometer.
  6. Rest and serve: Remove the chicken from the air fryer and let it rest for 10 minutes. This helps retain juices. Carve and serve warm.
